Tamil Nadu ,May 19, 2020 : After a brief respite, new covid cases touched a new high of 688 in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, taking the total to 12,448, the health department said in a statement. With three more deaths, all aged men from Chennai, the toll reached 84.
Of the new cases, 601 originated in Tamil Nadu. The remaining 87 were stranded Indians who returned from Maharashtra, Kerala and from Dubai, Kuwait, Maldives, Malaysia. The returnees from Maharashtra accounted for 59 cases, one from Kerala. The rest were those who returned from abroad.
The press release said that 54 who returned from abroad and were quarantined at Chennai airport reported positive till Tuesday. Besides, eight who tested negative upon return from abroad, turned positive in the exit test after seven days. Besides this, two who came by train and were quarantined, tested positive.
The 60 infected persons from Maharashtra and Kerala added to the tally of districts like Kallakurichi and Thoothukudi .
The three who died in the last two days included a 64-year-old man from Tiruvallur near Chennai and a 72-year-old man and an 82-year-old man from Chennai.
Maintaining the current trend, Chennai accounted for 552 of the new 688 cases, taking its tally to 7,672, that is over 60 per cent of the total number of cases in the State.
Neighbouring Chengalpattu reported 22 new cases, taking the total to 560. Kanchipuram added another five to its tally to touch 560. Tiruvallur reported eight new cases( total 571).
Worst affected by imported cases from Maharashtra and other States was Tirunelveli which recorded 20 such cases( total 226). Kallakurichi was next to be hit the most with 10 cases from Maharashtra, besides one case on its own , taking the total to 111.
Kanyakumari reported two cases , plus two from Maharashtra and one from Maldives. taking the district tally to 49.
Though Tenkasi had no new cases, it was affected by infected persons from Maharashtra, taking its total to 72. Thoothukudi reported only one new case, but five cases from Maharashtra took its tally to 91.
Cuddalore, whose tally jumped to 418, all cases imported from Koyambedu vegetable market in Chennai, added two more to its tally on Tuesday, one from Kerala and one from Maharashtra.
On the positive side, 489 were discharged from hospitals on Tuesday, taking the total number of those cured to 4,895.
