Chennai, May 19 : The Tamil Nadu police have so far arrested 4,92,981 persons for violating the lockdown guidelines imposed under Section 144 of CrpC to combat the spread of coronavirus in the State. A press release from the DGP office here today said so far 4,65,241 violations have been recorded ever since the lockdown was imposed on March 25 and FIRs have been registered against those who had violated the lockdown rules. Police seized as many as 4,03,777 vehicles from those who stepped out of their houses for non-essential purposes.
However, the vehicles were being returned to their owners in a phased manner. A total amount of Rs 6,39,40,044 has been collected as fine from the violators. In Chennai city, 500 cases were registered for violating the lockdown during the last 24 hrs from 0600 hrs yesterday morning to 0600 hrs today and a total of 94 vehicles were seized. This included 69 two-wheelers, three autos and two LCVs. Apart from this, the traffic police have seized 525 vehicles, including more than 500 autos, for traffic violations, a release from the Chennai City Police Commissioner Office said. (UNI)
