TN Govt starts six-day week

S Murari

The Tamil Nadu, May 15, 2020 : Government announced on Friday that Government offices will work six days a week with 50 percent workforce from May 18, Monday. They will work in shifts, it said in a prèss release.

This marks a further relaxation of regulations as the lockdown completes the third phase on May 17. The Government announced relaxation in the last phase itself by allowing shops, factories and a host of other facilities to enable resumption of economic activity.

The Government, all through the three phases, allowed its employees engaged in maintenance of essential services to work but with reduced strength.

This decision indicates that the Government is going to resume bus services after a gap of two months from Monday as otherwise employees cannot attend offices.

The government had decided to resume metropolitan bus services, but with only 50 per cent load to ensure social distancing. However, inter-district bus services will stay suspended for now.

The decision to switch to a six-day week from the present five-day week is to make up for lost time. This is again in keeping with the Centre’s decision to make the people to work extra hard to revive the battered economy by proposing amendment of labour laws to increase working hours to 12 hours a day from eight now.
