The Tamil Nadu on Tuesday reported another 716 new Covid cases, taking the total to 8,178 . With eight more deaths recorded, the total reached 61, the health department said in a press release.
Of the new cases, Chennai accounted for 510, taking its total to 4,882. This came to 59.99 per cent of the total.
Chengalpattu and Kanchipuram neighbouring also saw a spike in new cases. Chengalpattu accounted for 35 cases, (total 391) while adjoining Kanchipuram reported 24 new cases (total 156). Tiruvallur and Perambalur reported 27 new cases each. With this, the total cases in Tiruvallur touched 467 and in Perambalur 132.
Ariyalur reported 36 more cases, taking the total to 344. It was among the cluster of districts along with Cuddallore and Villupuram which saw a sharp spike in cases following spread of infection from those who visited the wholesale vegetable market Koyambedu in Chennai before it was closed down. Surprisingly, Cudallore and Villupuram reported only one new case each for the second running.
Tiruvannamalai recorded 13 more cases(105). Among other districts, Ranipet saw 9 new cases, while neighbouring Vellore had only one case. Theni recorded seven new cases, and Karur and Virudhanagar four each. Tirunelveli had three new cases while Kallakurichi, Thoothukudi and Tiruchi reported two cases each.
Kanyakumari and Tenkasi had one new case each.
The Government also reported that four of the stranded Indians from Gulf who returned to Chennai as part of the Vande Mataram mission tested positive for Covid.
Another 83 were discharged on Tuesday, taking the total number of patients cured to 2,134.
