Teenage girl set afire, dies

A teenage school girl, who was set ablaze by two men on Sunday evening probably owing to enmity with the father, died on Monday in a village in Villupuram, 150 km south of Chennai.

The 14-year-old girl, who was admitted to Villupuram Government General Hospital with 70 per cent burns, succumbed around noon on Monday.

On the basis of her dying declaration, police arrested G Murugan (52), husband of a former AIADMK councillor, and K Kaliyaperumal.

Police said the incident happened in Thiruvennainallur village in Villupuram. They said the girl was the daughter of a petty shop owner Jayapal with whom Murugan and Kaliyaperumal had a feud.

The girl was alone in her house when these two men barged in, poured kerosene on her and set her on fire, the police said, quoting her statement.
