798 fresh cases emerge, TN tally crosses 8,000-mark, 6 more deaths, takes toll to 53

Chennai, May 11 : The number of positive cases in Tamil Nadu continued to be on the upswing with a single day high of 798 cases reported on Monday taking the tally past 8000- mark, even as a record number of six deaths were reported as the toll mounted to 53.

A 50-year-old man with Systemic Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus from Chennai admitted on May 6 in Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) died at 1545 hours yesterday, a 67-year-old woman with Systemic Hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus and Hypothyroidism from Chennai admitted on May 9 in RGGGH died at 1730 hours yesterday, a 32-year-old woman with Systemic Hypertension, Bronchial asthma and Basilar artery aneurysm from Cuddalore admitted on May 6 in RGGGH died at 1410 hours on May 8.

Another 36-year-old woman with Diabetes Mellitus and Bronchial asthma from Chennai admitted on May 9 in RGGGH died at 1930 hours on May 9, a 66-year-old woman with Systemic Hypertension and Coronary Artery Disease from Chennai admitted on May 9 in a Private Hospital died at 1055 hours today, while another 65-year-old man with Stage-4 Carcinoma pancreas with multiple metastasis from Kanyakumari admitted on May 9 in Kanyakumari Medical College Hospital died at 2140 hours on May 9, taking the COVID-19 toll to 53, according to a bulletin issued by the Health and Family Welfare Department said. Of the total 53 deaths, 32 were reported in Chennai, 4 in Chengalpattu, 2 each in Madurai, Thiruvallur and Villupuram and one each in Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Erode, Kancheepuram, Kanyakumari, Ramanathapuram, Theni, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Vellore. The number of coronavirus positive cases reported today was 798 (514 men and 284 women) as a total of 8,002 people have tested positive so far in Tamil Nadu that included 5,421 men, 2,579 women and two transgenders. Fresh cases were reported in as many as 17 districts. Of the 798 cases, Chennai once again topped with 538 cases and most of them were linked to the Koyambedu market, taking the city's coronavirus tally to 4,371. Next to Chennai, the Thiruvallur district reported 97 cases, followed by Chengalpattu (90), Ariyalur (33), Thiruvannamalai (10), Kancheepuram (8), Madurai and Ramathapuram ( 4 each), Thanjavur and Thoothukudu (3 each), Dharmapuri (2), Dindigul, Kanyakumari, Perambalur, Ranipet, Vellore and Virudhunagar (1 each). Of the total 8,002 cases, 427 (237 men, 190 women) were in the 0-12 age group, 7,023 (4,844 men, 2,177 women and transgender 2) in 13-60 age group and 552 (340 men and 212 women) in 60-plus age group. Districtwise, Chennai continued to remain on top of the COVID chart with 4,371 cases, followed by Thiruvallur (440), Cuddalore (395), Chengalpattu (356), Ariyalur (308), Villupuram (298), Coimbatore (146), Kancheepuram (132), Madurai (121), Tiruppur (114) and Dindigul (109). A total number of 92 people, who have tested positive, were discharged today, as the number of cured patients increased to 2,051. Till date, a total of 2,54,899 samples of persons have been taken and sent for testing of which 8,002 people tested positive, 2,45,562 negative, while testing of 1,335 samples were under process and 10,947 were repeat samples of the same persons. The total number of persons tested till date was 2,43,952 which included 11,584 persons today. A total of 4,273 suspected individuals were under treatment in isolation wards.
