Chennai, May 6 : The Tamilnadu government has issued a notification to acquire late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s Poes Garden residence “Veda Nilayam” in the city to convert it into a Government memorial. The notification was issued under Rule 16 of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Rules, 2017, as per the government's earlier announcement made in 2017 to convert her house into a memorial.
The government wants to acquire 0.22.60.0 sqmts of land for public purpose, to convert the land and buildings of Ms Jayalalithaa as Government Memorial. The notification said it was issued after hearing of objections of persons interested and due enquiry as provided under Sec 15 of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013 (Central Act 30 of 2013). It said “this project does not involve any displacement of families/relocation. There are no Project Affiliated Families (PAFs) and hence no question of relocation, resettlement and rehabilitation. Therefore it is declared that no area was identified as a “resettlement area for the purpose of rehabilitation and resettlement of the affected families”.
“A plan of the land may be inspected in the office of the Land Acquisition Officer and Revenue Divisional Officer, South Chennai Revenue Division, Guindy, on any working day”, it added. It may be recalled that Ms Jayalalithaa’s niece J Deepa has opposed the Tamil Nadu government’s move to convert her aunt’s residence here into a memorial and has moved the Madras High Court. (UNI)
