As the number of new COVID infections in Tamil Nadu touched a new high of 771 on Wednesday, the total number of cases went well past 4,000 to reach 4,829, the health department said in an update. It said two more deaths were reported, taking the total toll to 35.
It also said another 31 patients were discharged afte treatment, taking the number of those cured of the Covid virus to 1,516. Besides, another 3,275 were under treatment.
While the spurt in cases was attributed to spread of infection from Koyambedu wholesale market in Chennai to retail traders in Cuddallore, Villupuram and other nearby districts, Chennai also had its own high number of infections and continued as the worst affected district.
Chennai accounted for 324 new cases, taking the total to 2,328. Cuddallore reported 95 fresh cases, taking the total there to 324. Kanchipuram, neighbouring Chennai accounted for another 45 new cases( Total 87). Ariyalur showed a big jump of 188 cases( total 222). Villupuram reported a high 164 cases. Likewise Perambalur showed a hike of 40 cases.
Tiruvallur neighbouring Chennai recorded another 34 cases(129). Virudhanagar reported 35 new cases and Krishnagiri four.
In the rest of the State it was not very high. Madurai accounted for 20 more cases 111), Tiruvannalamai 17 more cases (42), Ranipet 43 and Salem 35.
Among other districts, Coimbatore had 146 total cases, Tiruppur 114, Tiruvarur 32, Tiruchi 57,Dharmapuri 2, Dindigul 107, Erode 70, Kallakurichi 53, Kanyakumari 17, Karur 45, Nagapattinam 45, Madurai 111, Namakkal 76 and Nilgiris 13, Pudukottai 3, Ramanathapuram 21, Sivaganga 12, Tenkasi 51, Thanjavur 63, Theni 51 andTirunelveli 65.
