With 52 more cases reported in the past 24 hours, the total number touched 1,937 in Tamil Nadu, the health department said in an update on Covid. The death toll remained at 24.
As usual, Chennai accounted for the maximum number of new cases, 47 of the 52. The total cases in Chennai touched 570 cases, followed by Coimbatore (141), Tiruppur (112),Dindigul (80), Madurai (79), Erode (70), Tirunelveli (63),Namakkal (59), Chengalpattu (58), Thanjavur (55), Tiruvallur (53) and Tiruchi (51).
Among the new cases were seven who got infected in a barber shop in Nerkundram in north Chennai which was kept open in violation of lockdown regulations. As the barber shop owner has two more shops, contract tracing is on.
Also was infected a vegetable vendor in Koyamebdu, Asia's biggest vegetable wholesale and retail market. The vendor got the Covid from a truck driver who is from Maharashtra.
The Government went into emergency mode and held talks with vegetable traders to consider division of the market into three division with some going to Vandalur and another to Maduraivoil to contain the spread of the virus.. The traders, however, opposed the move saying it would affect their livelihood.
The government said the number of those who had recovered from the disease had also gone up to 1,101.
