With 72 more Covid cases recorded in the last 24 hours, the total number of patients touched 1,755 on Friday. the Tamil Health Department said in a press release.
With two more succumbing, the number of those who died of Covid has gone up to 22. One died in Rajaji Government Hospital in Madurai and another in Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital in Chennai.
This was the second death in Madurai since it reported the State’s first casualty last month.
Of the 72 new cases, 52 were from Chennai. Nine were primary cases, that is those who got the infection on their own . Another43 got the virus from their contacts, pointing to lapses in enforcement of social distancing.
Of the other 20 cases, 13 were from Coimbatore, Madurai, Ramanathapuram. Two were from Tiruvallur and one each from Kanchipuram, Salem, Tiruvannamalai, Tenkasi and Virudhunagar.
Chennai had the maximum number of cases at 452, followed by Coimbatore (141), Tiruppur (110), Dindigul (80), Erode (70), Tirunelveli (63), Chengalpattu (57), Madurai (56), Thanjavur and Namakkal (55 each), Tiruvallur (52) and Tiruchi (51)..
The total number of samples taken and sent for testing was 72,403, including 6,426 Friday, of which 1,755 tested positive., Another 1,483 samples were under process.
A total of 25,503 patients were under active quarantine and 19 under Government quarantine, the press release said.
