Eleven Indonesians were remanded by a Salem magistrate to custody on Thursday after police arrested them for preaching after coming to India as tourists.
Along with them five locals who were in touch with them were also booked by Salem police. All 16 were arrested
on a complaint by a village administrative officer that the Indonesians indulged in preaching which is a violation of visa norms.
As five of them tested positive for Covid, all were quarantined in Mohan Kumaramangalam government general hospital.
After the quarantine ended, they were produced before a Salem judicial magistrate who remanded them to judicial custody till April 35.
The police thereupon brought them to Chennai in the early hours of Friday and lodged them in Puzhal Central Prison.
