Community halls to shelter migrant workers

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami on Thursday opened two community halls in Chennai, one in Raja Annamalaipuram and another in Velacheri , to shelter migrant workers.

Talking to reporters later, Palanisami said the Government had made arrangements to provide shelter, food and clothing to over 1.54 lakh migrant workers in the State.

He said prohibitory orders under Sec 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code banning assembly of more than five persons in public places had been enforced mainly to avoid crowding and to make people maintain social distancing to check the further spread of the Coronavirus.

Despite the 21-day countrywide lockdown now in force, people were not taking the regulations seriously, he lamented and warned that violators of the prohibitory orders would be dealt with sternly hereafter.
