March 22 2020 Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Puducherry joined the rest of the country in saluting doctors and nurses who are battling the Covid19 virus by clapping hands and hooting horns at 5 pm on Sunday.Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on people to take a break during the 14 hour nation wide curfew being observed from 7 am to 9 p m and clap their hands and play cymbals to appreciate medical personnel battling the virus.Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, Edappadi K Palanosami and V Narayanaswamy led their States in saluringt the health personnel by coming of their houses and clapping hands while fire service personnel sounded their sirens and chimed their bellsPolicemen in uniform also joined in showing their appreciation of health personnel.The call given by Modi to the people to come out to the balconies of their apartments and beat the cymbals or clap their hands at 5 pm was inspired by the example set by Spaniards.Cutting across class lines, families living in multistoreyed apartment complex in cities and towns assembled in the open and clapped hands and beat eversilver plates with sticks.Edappadi Palanisami said not only health personnel,but all essential staff, including conservancy workers, should be remembered and their work appreciated in this critical hour.
