S K Prabhakaran is new Home Secretary

The Tamil Nadu Government on Saturday appointed S K Prabakar, a 1989 batch IAS officer, as the new Home Secretary upon the retirement of incumbent Niranjan Mardi.

Prabakar was Principal Secretary for the Highways Department and earlier held Public Works portfolio. Prabakar as PWD Secretary, he had represented Tamil Nadu in the Cauvery Water Management Authority meetings.

One of the last acts of his predecessor Niranjan Mardi was to finally retire controversial Additional DGP of the Idol Wing Pon Manickavel, who is already on an extension. Niranjan Mardi terminated Manickavel’s service on the advice of the DGP of Police S K Tripathi and directed him to hand over all case records to Additional DGP Abhay Kumar Singh.

Manickavel was on a one-year extended tenure from December 2018 on the orders of the Madras High Court and it ended on Saturday.

On Nov 22, Manickavel filed a petition in the Madras High Court, seeking extension of service for another year. But before the court could list it for hearing, the Government has asked him to leave.
