Nalini, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case who has been in jail for over 28 years, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking mercy killing on the ground that she is in severe mental trauma as she has repeatedly been cheated of hopes of early release.
This was disclosed to the media by her counsel P K Pugezhendhi after he met her in Vellore prison for women on Saturday. He said she had also written to the Madras High Court for a direction to transfer her along with her husband and fellow life convict Murugan alias Sriharan, who is now in Puzhal jail in Chennai, to any prison in Karnataka.
Nalini’s mother Padma, a retired nurse who was also convicted in the same case as an abettor and who has since served out her sentence, met her in jail on Friday. Nalini informed Padma about her letter to the Prime Minister, seeking mercy killing.
The letter was handed over to the Vellore prison superintendent of police. Nalini, who ended her protest fast on Nov 5, started yet another fast on Thursday to press for early release.
As mercy killing is allowed only in rarest of rare cases where patients are terminally ill for years, Nalani’s plea is bound to be rejected. Her request for transfer to any Karnataka prison may be considered as she as well as Murugan have been having frequent run-ins with prison administration and have gone on hunger strikes. Recently Murugan went on a protest fast after jail officials seized a mobile phone allegedly from his cell.
