Agency News

Chennai, Nov 29: Leader of Opposition and DMK President M.K.Stalin on Friday alleged that the ruling AIADMK government is afraid of holding the local bodies’ election in the state.

Talking to newsmen here, he said the AIADMK government has created as much as confusion as possible to keep away from holding the local body election, but instead it is blaming the DMK for the delay.

He said the DMK had moved the Supreme Court on Thursday seeking a direction to the authorities to carry out delimitation, reservation and rotational process before issuance of election notification for local body poll and also taking into consideration the five new districts carved out in the State.

The DMK was of the opinion that only if the delimitation, reservation and rotation process and all formal legal requirements were completed before the issuance of election notification the process would be free and fair, he said.

Mr Stalin said the government was yet to complete the delimitation of wards in all districts. In the new districts, which were created after dividing the present districts, the delimitations have not been done. In town panchayats, the government has not reserved seats for women and STs. The DMK President said the state cabinet had recently decided to change the direct election to the posts mayors and others in local bodies to indirect election. The government has created confusion, forcing us to move the court, he said, and added the DMK is ready to face local body election. (UNI)
