Chennai, Nov 26: A new district with Kallaurichi as its headquarters came into being today as the 34th district of Tamil Nadu.
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami inaugurated the new district in the presence of senior officials and the new Collector and Superintendent of Police at an official function. Speaking on the occasion, he said the ruling AIADMK, which was following the path laid down by the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, works hard for the betterment of the lives of the farmers.
Mr Palaniswami said various welfare schemes for the benefit of farmers were implemented by the government, but the Opposition DMK makes it a point to criticise the government. ”Kudimaramathu scheme--desilting of canals and water bodies with the involvement of the people--construction of check dams at a cost of Rs 600 crore and crop insurance scheme were implemented by the government, he pointed out.
He said a food park will be set up at Tindivanam where farmers could sell their products at a nominal price. He also announced new schemes for the district. Mr Palaniswami had earlier announced carving out of five new districts that included Kallakurichi from Villuppuram.
The newly formed district covers five taluks--Kallakurichi, Sankarapuram, Ulundurpet, Thirukovilur, Kalvarayanmalai. Formation of new districts in the State as announced by Mr Palaniswami was notified in the government Gazette on November 13. Tamilnadu will now have 37 districts, up from 32.
The other new districts were Ranipet and Tirupattur (carved out of Vellore), Tenkasi (from Tirunelveli), Chengalpattu (from Kancheepuram). (UNI)
