Chennai, Nov 14 : Officials of the Customs Air Intelligent Unit today seized 1.19 kg gold worth Rs 43.7 lakh and foreign currencies to the tune of Rs 45.4 lakh and arrested three passengers at the Anna International Airport here.
A release from the Office of the Commissioner of Customs said the officials intercepted a passenger Deepan Ashok Suthar (33) at the domestic airport, who arrived here from Dubai-Mumbai-Chennai Air India flight.
Upon searching him, they found six gold cut bars weighing 1.90kg and valued at Rs 43.7 lakh. The officials seized them under the Customs Act 1962 and arrested him. In another seizure, the officials intercepted two passengers—Syed Ibrahim (36) of Tiruvarur and Abdul Azeez (51) of Virudhunagar, who came to board an Air Asia flight to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
They opened their trolley bags and seized found foreign currencies including, Euro, Pound Sterling and Australian dollars in various denominations to the tune of Rs 45.4 lakh under under the provisions of Customs Act, 1962 read with Foreign Exchange Management Act, 2015, and arrested them. The total seizure in both the incidents was valued at Rs 89 lakh. Further investigation is under progress. (UNI)
