Chennai, Nov 10: Customs officials on Sunday seized 1.8 kg gold valued at Rs 71.5 lakh and 26.5 kg Iranian saffron worth Rs 63.6 lakh and arrested three persons at the Anna International airport here.
A release from the office of the Commissioner of Customs said based on specific information, two passengers--Ameer Thekkulla Kandy (41) and Haroon Nahar Moyath (29) from Kozhikode--who arrived from Dubai by an Emirates flight, were intercepted at the exit.
The officials searched them and found gold in the form of a rubbery spread, concealed inside the waistband of their pants. After extraction, 1.82 kg gold, valued at Rs 71.5 lakh was recovered and seized under the Customs Act, 1962. Both the passengers were arrested.
In another seizure, the officials intercepted a passenger Mohammed Javid Mushar (22) of Nagapattinam, who arrived from Dubai via Muscar by an Oman Air Flight. He was found roaming suspiciously inside the arrival hall. When he started leaving in a hurried manner after collecting his checked-in baggage from the belt, the customs officials intercepted him, searched his bags and recovered saffron packets of Iranian orgin.
The saffron was packed in pouches of 25 gms each, totally weighing 26.5 kg and valued at Rs 63.30 lakh. The passenger was arrested and the saffron was seized under the Customs Act. Further investigation is under progress. (UNI)
