Tamil film star Kamal Haasan on Friday unveiled a bust of his film guru and Tamil film producer-director K Balachandar in his film production company Raj Kamal in Chennai.
His contemporary and super star Rajini and leading film director Mani Rathnam were among those who attended the function at the office.
Kamal said Raj Kamal would soon announce its 50th film and it would be a blockbuster.
He recalled that when he started Raj Kamal production, Balachandar was among the first honoured guests.
Though Kamal entered the Tamil film world as a child artiste in the 1950s, it was Balachandar who introduced him as a hero in his controversial film Arangetram. Likewise, it was Balachandar who introdued Rajini through Apoorva Ragangal in the mid-1970s.
Kamal said the bust was a tribute to his guru . “ This bust will guide me in the times to come”, he said.
Kamal said the Golden Jubilee Icon award to Rajini was belated. Rajini became an icon from the very first movie, like Sivaji, he said
Though they were rivals in films, they acted together in their initial years in Balachandar’s direction, Then they took a conscious decision to go their separate ways. Kamal said “we have been inseparable friends from the very outset”.
Rajini said Balachandar spotted his talent at the very outset and told him to learn Tamil.
“If you learn Tamil, I will take you to dizzy heights’, Rajini quoted Balachandar of having told him. This showed how well Balachandar knew the taste of the Tamil people, Rajini said.
He also said though he was a disciple of Balachandar, it was Kamal who was his pet.
