In a major burglary in an employees’ cooperative bank in Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) complex in Tiruchi(Trichy), Rs 1.1 crore was found stolen on Friday morning.
The police have taken the BHEL cashier Ravindran into custody for questioning as he had taken the cash in a suitcase to the bank for deposit on Thursday evening. The bank was found broken into in the morning and the suitcase found lying on a drawer there was emptied of cash.
The police are questioning as to why Ravindran left the cash in an open suitcase on a drawer instead of putting it in a locker as is normally done.
Employees lock the bank after putting cash in the locker. Police say the burglars gained entry through a window .
The BHEL is a complex employing over 40,000 employees is situated in Tiruvarumbur on the outskirts of Tiruchi. Access to it is restricted and even employees have to show their ID cards. Visitors are allowed only after security check. Security guard are on round the clock duty. The coop bank also has night and day watchmen.
Police are examining the footage from the CCTV camera installed in the complex. Given the right security in the complex, police suspect it is an inside job.
Nevertheless the theft has sent shock waves as it is the third such incident in the town this year after a similar break-in in Punjab National Bank in Samayapuram on Tiruchi outskirts last January and in the Lalitha Jewellery showroom in Chatram bus stand in the heart of the town last month.
Tiruvarur Murugan, a notorious criminal and four of associates have been secured in connection with the Lalitha Jewellery breakin and they are also being implicated in the earlier Punjab National Bank robbery also.
