Toddler drowns in pit dug for constructing rainwater harvesting structure in TN

Agency News

Virudhunagar, Oct 30: A day after Sujith Wilson, a toddler, died after falling into an abandoned borewell in Nadukattupatti, a three-year-old boy drowned on Wednesday in a recharge pit dug up for constructing a rainwater harvesting structure at Ondipulinaickanur village in this district.

Police said the deceased was identified as M Rudran. The boy had gone to his grandfather’s house, where the pit with a depth of over three feet was dug for the rainwater harvesting structure. The pit was filled with rainwater following intermittent rains in the district. Rudran, while playing, accidentally fell into the pit and drowned. He was retrieved from the pit and rushed to the hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

Police have registered a case and are investigating. Notably, the decomposed body of Wilson was retrieved early Tuesday by rescuers from deep inside the unused borewell, following an 80-hour failed attempt to save the child who had fallen in while playing near his house in Nadukattupatti in Tiruchirappalli.
