TN sets up panels to review water issue with Kerala


The Tamil Nadu Government has set up two committees to review the Parambikulam-Aliyar(PAP) agreement and the Pandiyar-Punnampuzha scheme with Kerala on sharing of west-flowing rivers.

The formation of two committees is as per an agreement reached at the last meeting of the Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Edappadi K Palanisami and Pinarayi Vijayan in Thiruvananthapuram on Sept 25.

A Government Order issued by Public Works Department K Manivasan, who will be heading the two committees, has said the two panels will hold talks on reviewing agreement on the PAP, construction of reservoir to divert water from Annamalai river to Tamil Nadu, the Nirar-Nallar Straight Cut,a balancing reservoir above Manacadavu weir, and other issues related to the PAP project for implementation of the Pandiyar-Punnampuzha project.

The second committee will be headed by R Subramaniam, chairman of the Cauvery technical cell cum inter-State water wing. Subhramaniam will also be there in the first committee.

The two committees will hold meetings whenever necessary, undertake field inspection and tours within Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The members can undertake these tours independently or jointly with members of the Kerala committees.
