An innocuous tweet by DMK president M K Stalin, hailing latest Dhanush starrer ‘Asuran’ for highlighting the alienation of lands assigned to the Dalits by upper castes has landed him in a political slugfest with Pattali Makkal Katchi(PMK) founder S Ramadoss who has said DMK mouthpiece Murasoli’s building has been raised in such panchami lands, as they are called, in Chennai.
Vehemently denying the charge, Stalin has said the land was bought from original patta owners and he is ready to quit politics if Ramadoss could prove his charge. “Will Ramadoss and his son Anbumani quit politics if they fail to prove the charge,'' he challenged in a tweet.
The lands assigned to Scheduled Castes during the British rule in the late 10th century have come to be known as Panchami lands. Over the years, these lands have been usurped by upper castes in Tamil Nadu. The film highlights the struggle of one such oppressed family to regain its land.
