Chennai, Oct 9 : The Chennai police on Tuesday arrested a professor from Taipei, on the charge of planning to stage a black flag demonstration during the visit of Chinese President Xi Jingping for the bilateral summit at Mamallapuram.
This is in continuation of the crackdown on Tibetans and Chinese dissidents. Dr Tenzin Norbu (34), an English Department faculty at a deemed university in Kelambakkam on the city outskirts, was arrested by the Palavakkam police and remanded in judicial custody.
He is charged with providing accommodation to the arrested Tibetans.With this, the number of arrest of Chinese dissidents in the City has gone up to nine. Earlier, eight Tibetan youth, including activist writer, Tenzin Tsundue, were arrested on Sunday night.
Tsunbue was arrested twice, in Mumbai and Bengaluru, for staging similar protests and unfurling ‘Tibetan’ flag. Following the alert from the Central Intelligence Agencies, DGP JK Tripathy had asked all Superintendents of Police and Commissioners of Police to monitor activities of Tibetan in their respective jurisdiction.(UNI)
