Chennai, Oct 6 : PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss today condemned the
Karnataka Government for seeking environmental clearance to construct a
new dam at Mekedatu across the Cauvery stating that Tamil Nadu's consent was not needed for it.
In a statement here, he said Karnataka writing a letter to the Centre in this
regard, was 'venomous' and would endanger national integrity and affect the
relations between the two states and urged the Centre not to grant any
environmental clearance to the project.
Karnataka had not been releasing water to the State as per the
orders of the Supreme Court but taking steps to construct a dam at Mekedatu. Karnataka's earlier plea was rejected by the expert committee of the Union
Environmental Ministry on July 19, he said.
''In this scenario, Karnataka has written a letter seeking environmental clearance
to construct the dam and that Tamil Nadu's consent was not required for it'', he said.
Ramadoss said the apex court had several times had ruled that Karnataka should not construct any dams across river Cauvery without the prior consent of Tamil Nadu.
He said Karnataka has neem releasing only surplus waters to Tamil Nadu after the dams in that state were filled to the brim.
He said if the 70-tmc ft capacity Mekedatu dam was allowed to be constructed, Tamil Nadu will not get even a single drop of water.(UNI)
