Chennai, Oct 6 : Customs officials on Sunday seized 620 gm gold worth Rs 24.5 lakh from two passengers, including a woman, who arrived here from Malaysia at the Anna International airport here.
A statement from the office of the Commissionerate of Customs said based on information, a passenger, Yasar Arafath Mohammed Yusuf (29) from Chennai, who arrived by Air Asia flight, was intercepted at exit on suspicion of carrying gold.He appeared to be nervous and on questioning, he gave evasive replies.On his personal search, three gold cut bits totally weighing 70 gm and valued at Rs 2.76 lakh
were recovered from his pant pocket.
On examination of his check-in baggage, five Denn brand portable radios were found among his personal effects.On opening, five gold circular gold bits were found concealed, one in each radio totally weighing 165 gm, which were valued at Rs 6.5 lakh.
Total 235 gm gold valued at Rs 9.26 lakh was recovered and seized under.In the other incident, a woman passenger Kamala Narasimma Rao (52), who arrived from Kuala Lumpur by Batik Air Flight, was intercepted at the exit.On persistent questioning, she admitted to have concealed gold cut bits in her rectum.Seven gold cut bits weighing 385 gm and valued Rs.15.2 lakh were recovered and seized under the Customs Act, 1962.In all 620 gm gold worth Rs 24.46 lakh were seized.(UNI)
