S Murari

The Tamil Nadu police have nabbed two men in connection with the Rs 13 crore theft in Lalalitha Jewellery in Tiruchi a few days ago.

Manikandan and Suresh were caught when they tried to flee a vehicle check at Tiruvarur. Police are on the lookout for notorious criminal Murugan who is believed have masterminded the burglary. Manikandan was also allegedly involved in the Punjab National Bank break-in in Tiruchi some years ago.

Murugan is involved in many bank robberies in neighbouring Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telengana. He was released in bail in 2011 in one case in Karnataka and he moved to Hyderabad where also he was involved in many cases. He has been evading arrest for years.

With his ill-gotten wealth he also made a couple of Telugu movies. He also helped his relatives in his native village in Thiruthuraipoondi. The burglars, wearing masks and gloves and sporting jerkhins, broke into the ground floor of show room in the early of Oct 2 by drilling a hole in a wall on the back side. They made a clean sweep of all the jewels kept there. The sheer audacity of the crime made the police suspect it could have been carried out by a north Indian gang.
