Madurai, Sep 25 : The Customs officials have seized 23 rifles used for shooting competitions from three air passengers at Madurai Airport.
Official sources said here on Wednesday that the rifles valued at Rs 17 lakh were brought from Dubai to Madurai in a SpiceJet aircraft on Sunday by Ajmal Khan, Kalik Mohammed and Munizpu, hailed from Kerala. The trio was detained at the airport, as they did not possess any valid documents permitting them to bring the rifles to India.
The passengers claimed that they have registered themselves with the National Rifle Association of India and the rifles were meant for shooting practices to participate in shooting competitions. Following this, the Customs officials examined their claim with the officials of the National Rifle Association of India.
After a detailed examination, it was found that the trio have not registered themselves with any government recognized shooting associations or clubs. Further investigation is on. (UNI)
