Rameswaram, Sep 24 : In yet another haul, the Coastal Security Group (CSG) of Tamil Nadu Marine Police on Tuesday seized around 400 kilograms of sea cucumbers meant for smuggling to Sri Lanka at Pamban here.
Based on specific inputs, the marine police conducted checks near the Rameswaram bus stand. However, a van gave a slip to the police and sped away. The van was later intercepted at the Pamban check post by the police. The police recovered around 400 sea cucumbers packed in seven gunny bags from the van.
Two persons ferrying the marine species were detained for questioning. Preliminary investigations revealed that the duo was planning to smuggle the sea cucumbers to Sri Lanka. The Marine police on Sunday seized 200 live sea cucumbers poached unlawfully from 11 fishermen at Mandapam near here.
Poaching and trading of Sea Cucumbers, listed in Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 was banned in India. These marine species were in great demand not only as delicacy, but also used for preparing some traditional medicines in countries like China, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand etc.(UNI)
