Chennai, Sep 8 : Leaders of various political parties, including DMK President M K Stalin and Rajya Sabha MP and MDMK General Secretary Vaiko, PMK Founder Dr S Ramadoss condoled the death of eminent jurist and former Union Minister Ram Jethmalani, who passed away in New Delhi on Sunday.
Mr Stalin, in his condolence message, recalled Mr Jethmalani's stint as Union Law Minister during the tenure of former Prime Minister A B Vajpayee and handled them with aplomb, besides his role as a Member of both Houses of Parliament. Stating that he was a very close friend of former DMK President and late Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, he said Mr Jethmalani would call on Mr Karunanidhi whenever he visited Chennai.
Mr Jethmalani's close friend Mr Vaiko, in his message recalled his arguments in the Madras High Court that saved the seven life convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination from the gallows. He said he used to treat him as his own son and said every year he used to call him and wish him on his birthday on September 14. Dr Ramadoss, in his message, recalled the arguments put forth by Mr Jethmalani in the Rajiv convicts case and said his death was a great loss to the Nation.
Describing him as a legal luminary, he said the Indian legal and political history could not be written by avoiding Mr Jethmalani as he has achieved so many laurels in both the spheres.
Stating that he has the sole distinction of having served as an advocate for nearly 75 years, Dr Ramadoss recalled his criticisms against the government during the days Emergency. 'And when the government was hell bent on arresting him, he thwarted it and fled to Canada from where he continued his fight against Emergency. The young politicians should know this bold history of Mr Jethmalani', he added. He also said as a Law College professor, he was instrumental in creating and moulding a large number of advocates and judges.(UNI)
