All political parties in Tamil Nadu, including the DMK, have welcomed the appointment of State BJP president Tamilisai Soundarajan as the Governor of Telangana.
In a tweet, DMK president M K Stalin has said he is happy that a woman leader from Tamil Nadu has been made Governor. Tamilisai’s father and senior Congressman Kumari Anandan said it was a reward for “her abilities and hard work”. Former Central Minister and senior BJP leader Pon Radhakrishnan has welcomed her appointment said recognition by the central leadership of her work Tamil Nadu chief for the past five years.
Tamilisai has been made Governor as her term as Tamil Nadu BJP president is due to end this December. With her exit from the scene, a new leader has to be found for the post. Tamilisai, daughter of senior Congress leader Kumari Ananthan, has been with the BJP for the past 20 years. She took over as party president in August 2014.
Talking to reporters at Kamalalaya, BJP State headquarters, an emotional Tamilisai said she was severing ties with the party with which had a long association now that she had been made Governor. She said she was leaving the BJP after enrolling 45 lakh members during her tenure as State chief.
Striking a personal note, she said that after she joined the party, she had to keep her distance from her father, Kumari Anandan. “It has always been a sore point with me”. She also has had to keep her distance from her uncle H Vasanth Kumar, senior Congressman and MP from Kanyakumari.
A doctor by profession, Tamilisai has come from non-RSS background and she rose steadily from the position of south Chennai BJP medical wing in 1999.
She was made State party chief after she campaigned actively for the BJP in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. In the 2019 elections, she lost to DMK leader Kanimozhi in Thoothukudi. She has also lost two Assembly elections.
