An Army jawan on Tuesday shot dead a havildar, hours after he was punished for dereliction of duty. He later killed himself with the same rifle, police said.
The incident happened in Pallavaram defence personnel quarters in the early hours of Tuesday. The deceased have been identified as hawildar Praveen Kumar Joshi (38) of Dehra Dun and the rifleman Jaikusheer Singh (21) of Punjab of the 17th Battalion of theJammu and Kashmir Rifles regiment.
The bodies, sent for post-mortem to the Government Rajiv Gandhi Hospital, will be sent to their native places later.
Reports said Praveen Kumar pulled up Jaikusheer Singh on Monday for coming late for duty and being lethargic in duty and ordered him to run around the parade ground two times as a punishment. Resenting this, the jawan killed the havildar in the early hours of Tuesday.
