Chennai, Aug 27 : Customs officials have seized 3.5 kg of gold worth Rs 1.40 crore and arrested four people at the Anna International airport in separate incidents in the intervening hours of Monday-Tuesday.
A release from the Office of the Commissioner of Customs said due to constant vigil, the officials detected two cases of gold smuggling on Tuesday and four cases on Monday. On Tuesday one Abdul Munaf (45) of Ramanathapuram and Askarali (39) of Pudukottai, who arrived from Dubai by an Emirates Flight, were intercepted on suspicion of carrying gold.
On persistent questioning, the passengers admitted to have concealed gold in the form of rubbery spread in his rectum. On extraction of rubbery spread, two gold ingots weighing 1.33 kg were recovered, one gold cut bit weighing 35 gms and a gold chain weighing 44 gms of 24 K purity recovered from their person.
A total of 1.41 kg gold valued at Rs 56.36 lakh was recovered. Further, on examination of their checked in luggage, 26 used laptops valued at Rs 1.30 lakhs and eight cartons of Gudang Garam cigarettes woth Rs 19,200 were also recovered. Both the passengers were arrested. (UNI)
