Chennai, Aug 24 : Customs officials have seized Gold, Iranian Saffron, Iphones, apple watches and cigarettes, valued at Rs 52.5 lakhs, from three passengers at the Anna International airport here on Saturday.
A release from the office of the Commissioner of Customs said the officials have detected three cases of smuggling of gold and one case of smuggling of saffron, cigarettes and mobile phones/watches.
The officials intercepted a passenger Rawther Naina (25) and Pakkeer Mohamed (24) from Ramanathapuram, who arrived from Singapore by Air India Express Flight and one Mohamed Abdul (25) also from Ramanathapuram who had arrived from Dubai via Colombo by Srilankan Airlines flight today morning. On persistent questioning all the three admitted to have concealed gold in the form of rubbery material in their rectum. On extraction through heating process, three gold ingots of 24K purity, totally weighing 937 gms and valued at Rs 36.51 lakh were recovered and seized under the provisions of Customs Act, 1962.
In another case, a passenger Zakir Hussain (24) of Sivaganga who had arrived from Dubai via Colombo by a Srilankan Airlines Flight was intercepted at the exit hall on suspicion of carrying electronics and contraband goods in his baggage. As he appeared nervous, the officials examined his checked-in baggage and seized five I-phone XS MAX and five Apple smart watch Series-4 valued at Rs.4.20 lakhs, Iranian grade-1 Termes Saffron weighing 4.75 kg valued at Rs.11.5 lakhs along with 12 cartons of GudangGaram Cigarettes, valued at Rs 29,000. Totally goods valued at Rs 16 lakhs were recovered. The total seizure (gold, saffron,cigarettes and phones,watches) were valued at Rs 52.5 lakhs.Further investigation is under progress. (UNI)
