Four Indian fishermen held in Sri Lankan waters

Pudukottai, Aug 21 : Sri Lanka Navy on Wednesday detained four Indian fishermen and confiscated their country boat allegedly for violating the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and engaged in illegal fishing.

Fisheries officials said the fishermen hailed from Jegadhapattinam coastal hamlet in Pudukottai district. They had ventured into the sea for fishing from Embavayal fishing jetty yesterday morning.

The fishermen were apprehended by the Northern Naval Command during a patrol in the Northern seas off Delft Island.

The fishermen along with the boat were handed over to Assistant Director of Fisheries in Jaffna for onward legal action.

This is the third instance of arrest of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lanka Navy so far this month.

Earlier, seven fishermen on board, a mechanized fishing trawler hailed from Rameswaram were detained for illegal fishing on August 13 and four fishermen hailing from Pudukottai district were arrested along with a mechanized fishing boat by the Sri Lanka Navy on August 19.(UNI)
