J Deepa, niece of late Chief Minister J Jayalalitha, on Monday announced that she had decided to disband her MGR-Amma-Deepa Peravai and merge it with the AIADMK.
Talking to reporters, she also said she was quitting active politics as doctors had advised her six months rest in view of her poor health. She said the outfit supported the AIADMK in the last April Lok Sabha polls and Assembly elections.
Deepa , daughter of Jayalalitha’s late brother Jayakumar, floated this letterpad organisation after the passing away of Jayalalitha, mainly to claim her Poes Garden residence and resist move by the Government to convert it into a memorial. Her husband Madhavan himself broke away from her in the initial stages itself and went with the AIADMK.
The main challenger to the AIADMK post-Jayalalitha has been T T V Dinakaran. He has since been reduced to non-entity with his Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam(AMMK) drawing a blank in the last elections.
This is because though the AIADMK also lost in the Lok Sabha elections, it managed to win nine out of 22 by-elections, just enough to ensure a comfortable majority for the Edappadi K Palanisami government. Now the AIADMK’s strength has gone up to 122, five more than the half way marks in the Assembly.
With the Government having come to stay and next elections due only in 2021, breakaway factions are returning to the AIADMK.
