Agency News

Chennai, Aug 9 : Counting of votes polled in the August five  elections to Vellore Parliamentary constituency began at 8am on Friday morning, amid tight security.

First, counting of about 3,039 postal ballots cast by police and army personnel were taken up, followed by the votes polled in the EVMs. The final result was expected around afternoon.

Tight security arrangements were made at the counting centre in Vellore with the deployment of central forces. An estimated 72 per cent of the total 18.85 lakh electorate exercised their franchise in the polls, which was earlier scheduled for April 18 but, rescinded due to seizure of large sums of money.

The fate of 28 candidates, including New Justice Party (NJP) Founder A C Shanmugham of the ruling AIADMK-led Front, and Kathir Anand of the Opposition DMK-alliance, would be known at the end of counting.

Kathir Anand is the son of DMK Treasurer Duraimurugan. The Lok Sabha seat consists of six Assembly segments that included Vellore, Anaikattu, Kilvaithinankuppam, Gudiyattam, Vaniyambadi and Ambur.

Mr Shanmugam had contested the seat for the third time. He had also served as Arni MLA in 1980 and Vellore MP in 1984.He lost to the AIADMK candidate B Senguttuvan in 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

Though both the AIADMK and the DMK forged mega alliances for the recent Lok Sabha polls, none of the alliance party leaders, including the BJP, DMDK, PMK, TMC and PT campaigned for the AIADMK, while top alliance party leaders from MDMK, CPI, CPI(M) and Congress addressed an election meeting on the last day of campaigning.
Actor Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiyam did not contest the  polls. The DMK-led Front swept the lok Sabha polls winning 37 of the 38 seats and 13 of the 22 Assembly seats, while the AIADMK won one LS seat and nine Assembly seats, that ensured its stability.(UNI)
