Polling for Vellore LS seat passes of peacefully

Chennai, Aug 5 : An estimated 70 per cent of the total 18.85 lakh electorate exercised their franchise, as polling for the Vellore Lok Sabha constituency, which was earlier
rescinded due to seizure of large sums of money, passed off peacefully.

No major untoward incident was reported in any part of the constituency as polling which began at 7am, ended at 6pm. Counting of votes would be taken up on August nine.The gates of the polling stations were closed at 6pm and all those, who had entered the polling booths by that time, were given tokens and would be allowed to exercise their democratic rights.

The polling, which began on a dull note, picked up momentum as the day progressed, with people turning up in good numbers to cast their vote. Elections were held to decide the fate of 28 candidates, including three women, though a majority of them being are Independents.

The main fight would be between NJP Founder A C Shanmugham of the ruling AIADMK-led Front, and Kathir Anand of the Opposition  DMK-led alliance. Kathir Anand is the son of Party Treasurer Duraimurugan.
