Madurai, Aug 5 : Heightened security arrangements are in place across the Southern districts of Tamil Nadu on Monday, after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) asked the States and Union Territories to keep security forces on maximum alert,' following abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution.
Police sources said all vital installations, places of worship, railway stations, bus stands, railway bridges etc were brought under security scanner. Police patrolling was increased in the sensitive areas to maintain public tranquility.
The coastal security agencies were directed to enhance surveillance along the entire south-east coast as a precautionary measure, the sources added. The Centre on Monday revoked Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir and proposed that the state be bifurcated into two union territories.
In a communiqué to states and union territories, the MHA asked the respective governments to take steps to ‘pre-empt’ and ‘prevent any breach of security’ besides to maintain vigil against circulation of false, unverified news, rumours and unscrupulous messages on social media aimed at disturbing peace, inciting violence and communal discord.
