Devotee crush to death under wheels of temple car

Nagapattinam, Aug 5 : In yet another tragic incident, a sexagenarian devotee was crushed to death and another seriously injured after they got stuck under the huge wheels of a temple car at Thingal Sandhayadi village near Vedaranyam here in the wee hours of Monday.

Police said the annual temple car festival of Arulmigu Sri Mazhai Mariamman Temple was organized on Sunday night as part of the ongoing “Aadi” festival. A large number of devotees participated in the festival and pulled the rope attached to the temple car. During the procession, Panchanathan (61) and Kumaresan (64), who were pulling the car, fell on the ground after they lost balance due to surging crowd at around 0130 hours today.

While Panchanathan succumbed to injuries, Kumaresan was admitted to the government hospital at Tiruvarur.Voimedu police have registered a case and are investigating.

It may be recalled that a senior priest namely S.Murali (56) of Sri Thyagarajaswami Temple at Tiruvarur died after falling from the temple car while performing “Aarti” on late Friday night. (UNI)
