Chennai, July 27: DMK President M K Stalin on Saturday started his campaign for the August five Vellore Lok Sabha polls.
Clad in black and red attire, Stalin covered several areas in the constituency by walk, interacting with the people, sipping tea, posed for photographs with them and canvassed votes for the DMK nominee Kathir Anand, who is the son of party Treasurer Duraimurugan. Several DMK men accorded him a rousing reception and people also
took selfies with him.
After finishing his morning walk, Stalin started his campaign near the Uzhavar Sandhai (farmers’ shandy), inter-acted with the vegetable vendors, traders and public and canvassed votes. Stalin, who would be campaigning for three days till Monday, would be covering all the Assembly segments coming under the constituency. The elections were earlier scheduled for April 18, but were rescinded following seizure of cash from the college and godown of Opposition DMK candidate Kathir Anand, who is the son of DMK Treasurer and former Minister Duraimurugan.
DMK won 37 of the 38 Lok Sabha seats in the April 18 polls. The elections would witness a three-cornered contest, but the fight would be between the AIADMK and the DMK. AIADMK ally Puthiya Neethi Katchi chief AC Shanmugam would be fighting polls on its two leaves symbol.
The third candidate in fray is Deepalakshmi of Naam Tamizhar Katchi of actor-director Seeman, besides Independents.
The Lok Sabha polls in Vellore constituency originally scheduled to be held along with 38 other seats in Tamil Nadu on April 18 was cancelled by the Election Commission.
The polls for the lone seat in Tamil Nadu was cancelled following cash seizure by income tax officials in Vellore district and allegations of bid to influence voters by bribing them.
In April, police had filed a complaint against Kathir Anand, son of senior DMK leader Durai Murugan and two others in connection with the income tax raids and related cash seizure. (UNI)
