BJP chief challenges Kanimozhi’s election

S Murari

Bharatiya Janata Party State president Tamilisai Soundararajan has filed an election petition in the Madras High Court challenging the victory of DMK candidate Kanimozhi from Thoothukudi in the recently held elections to the Lok Sabha.

Tamilisai, who lost by a whopping margin of 3.47 lakh votes to Kanimozhi, challenged her election on grounds of bribery of voters and defects in her nomination papers. Tamilisai said Kanimozhi filed four sets of nomination papers and all had substantial defects, including inconsistent claims with regard to the Assembly constituency in which she had registered herself as a voter.

She alleged Kanimozhi suppressed information in regard to her PAN number and the income tax returns of her husband K Aravindan and son Adhithyan.

Tamilisai also alleged that the basis of complaints made by the Tiruchendur tahsildar who was part of the poll flying squad, the local police registered an FIR against Kanimozhi and DMK district secretary K Anitha Radhakrishnan over distribution of money to voters.

The BJP leader also alleged that Kanimozhi gave Rs 2,000 to women voters who performed “aarathi” when she visited their villages. The returning officer accepted the nomination despite her objection, Tamilisai contended.

She prayed that Kanimozhi’s election be declared null and void.
