S Murari

R Ramakrishnan, retired director of TVS Motors and TVS Credit Services and former Rajya Sabha member from Tamil Nadu, died in Chennai on Sunday after a prolonged illness.

He was 73 and is survived by wife, son and daughter. Ramakrishnan, who was nominated to the Rajya Sabha when M G Ramachandran was Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, served as a member from 1981 to 86. He was also former chairman of the Madras Race Club.

Ramakrishnan started as officer on special duty in Indian Express, Madras in the 1970s. However, Express group chairman Ramnath Goenka eased him out after he joined the AIDMK and got nominated to the Rajya Sabha.

Though Ramakrishna was not a journalist and was holding a position equivalent to general manager, Goenka felt his entry into party politics would compromise the independence of Indian Express.
