Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary K Anbazhagan on Thursday appointed Udyanidhi Stalin, son of party president M K Stalin, general secretary of the youth of the wing of the party, marking the rise of yet another son in the party.
The post held by Stalin for 35 years, even after becoming grandfather.
Udhayanidhi, 42, is the managing director of the DMK trust that runs party organ Murasoli , founded by his grandfather and former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
The stage was set for Udhayanidhi Maran’s ascension in the party with the resignation of former Minister Vellakoil Swaminathan of the youth wing post.
Udhayanidhi Maran is the third generation leader from the Karunanidhi family to enter active politics. For long Karunanidh's nephew and former Union Minister Murasoli Maran, was his conscience keeper and his eyes and ears in New Delhi. After Murasoli Maran’s death, his son Dayanidhi Maran stepped into his shoes as Union Minister.
With Karunanidhi’s son Stalin as party head and daughter K Kanimozhi heading women’s wing, the family’s control of the party is complete.
Udhayanidhi campaigned for the DMK in the last Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu,. Though at a function held to felicitate him on his good work, Udhayanidhi said he was not after any post. He was proud to be an ordinary worker of the DMK , grandson of Karunanidhi and son of Stalin. But it was only for public consumption.
Several district units forwarded resolutions to the leadership recommending that Udhayanidhi be head of the youth wing.
Unlike Udhayanidhi who has got his desserts rather early, rewards came to Stalin late. Over a span of 45 years, he has risen from MLA to Minister, Chennai Mayor. working president and now president Now in his late 60s, Stalin is the Leader of the Opposition but the Chief Minister chair still eludes him.
Like all present generation leaders, Udhayanidhi is a man in a hurry.
He is 42, the right age to head the youth wing, his supporters say.
Udhayanidhi, besides being a producer, has also acted in a couple of films. It was his film popularity which helped him in the election campaign .
He is now married, but is continuing to do occasional roles in films.
