K Shanmugham on Sunday assumed charge as the Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu upon the retirement of his predecessor Girija Vaidyanathan.
In a parallel development, Odisha cadre IPS officer J K Tripathy took charge as the Director General of ( Law and Order) of Tamil Nadu and head of the police force as the two-year extended term of his predecessor T K Rajendran ended on Sunday.
Shanmugham, who had earlier served as Finance Secretary since 2010, will be the 46th Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu.
Though it was a Sunday, the two assumed charge of their key positions as the Tamil Nadu Assembly is meeting on July 1, Monday for its resumed budget session in which demands of grants for various departments will be voted upon.
Shanmugham , who as Finance Secretary assisted many Finance Ministers in the preparation of the State budget, had a 45-minute meeting with Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami at his residence before going to the Secretariat to take charge. Both Shanmugham and Palanisami hail from Salem.
Tripathy, who had earlier served as Police Commissioner of Chennai and Tiruchi, assumed office as DGP of Tamil Nadu around the same time.
