A working girl in her 20s was slashed with a machet by a boy of the same age after a heated argument at suburban Chetput railway station in Chennai at 8 p.m .on  Friday. After attacking the girl, the boy cut himself and jump into the track . As no train was coming at that time, he was caught by the public.

The girl, who got bleeding injuries on her face and jaw, is undergoing treatment at Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. The boy, who cut himself, has been admitted to the Rajaji Government General Hospital.

The police has given the name of the girl as Thenmozhi and said she was attacked because she resisted the boy’s advances. The two knew each other as they hailed from same Erode district. The girl was working in a cooperative society for the past three months.

Railway Deputy inspector of General Police (DIG) Sailendra Babu, who visited the girl at the hospital, said there were railway police personnel in major suburban stations, but Chetput was always desolate. He also admitted that the Railways had decided to install surveillance cameras in all stations to prevent crime, but many like Chetput were yet to be covered .

The dean of KMC told reporters that Thenmozhi was stable “but we have investigate whether the cut injury has impacted any nerves”. As it was a medico-legal case, she would have to be in hospital till she was completely cured which would take about ten days.

This is the second such incident in a suburban railway station. In 2016, Swathi who was also in her 20s was hacked to death in Nungambakkam by a spurned suitor in busy morning hours.
