Chennai, June 14 : Customs officials on Thursday seized 581 gms of gold, totally valued at Rs 19.7 lakh, in two separate incidents at the Anna International airport here.
A release from the office of the Commissioner of Customs said that officers intercepted one, Sulochana Reagan (55) of Madurai,who had arrived from Colombo by a Sri Lankan airlines flight.
During her personal search two bundles of gold in rubbery form, which were stitched and concealed in upper inner wear, were recovered.
On extraction gold weighing 277 gms of 24K purity and valued at Rs 9.37 lakhs was recovered and seized under Customs Act, 1962.
In the other incident, one Thahira Banu (35) hailing from Nagapattinam, who had arrived along with her daughter from Singapore via Colombo by another Srilankan Airlines flight, was intercepted on suspicion of carrying gold.
During her personal search, two crude gold chains of 24 karat purity of 304 gm and valued at Rs 10.3 lakh which were found concealed in her inner wear.
The same was recovered and seized under Customs Act 1962. (UNI)
