Senior Tamil film actor Radha Ravi on Thursday returned to the AIADMK from the DMK following his suspension from the party over derogatory remarks he made against artiste Nayanthara at a function last March.
He called on Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami and Deputy O Pannerselvam on Wednesday ahead of the crucial meeting of the AIADMK MLAs and MPs in Chennai.
Son of veteran actor M R Radha, Radha Ravi has been going back and forth between the AIADMK and the DMK since 2000.
Radha Ravi told reporters that his decision to return to the AIADMK was taken two days ago. He took exception to DMK president M K Stalin suspending him over his remarks against Nayanthara without seeking an explanation from him.
What drew widespread criticism was his comment that anyone could play Goddess and that audience was no longer discerning. Speaking at a cine function in which Nayanthara was also present, Radha Ravi said: “Earlier only some with image like K R Vijaya was cast in roles of Goddesses like Sita. Nowadays, Nayanthara acts as a ghost in one film and is cast as Sita in the next’.
He said that he expressed regret for the remark after widespread protests and yet he was suspended from the DMK without even a show-cause notice, he said.
Reacting to the AIADMK readmitting Radha Ravi, voice artiste Chinmaye Sripada in a tweet said DMK was moneycoddling with lyricist Vairamuthu which whom she had lodged a complaint of sexual harassment. Now the AIADMK was cozy with Radha Ravi. In a tweet. she said:”The next time these parties wax eloquent about women’s safety and rights, remember these names.”
