CBI files chargesheet in Pollachi rape case

The CBI on Friday filed a chargesheet in a court in Coimbatore against five persons from Pollachi, accusing them of having lured girls through social media, taking photos and blackmailing them into having sex. It has accused them of rape as consent for sex was got through coercion.

The CBI took over the case from the local Tamil Nadu police which booked them under different IPC sections like blackmail, but did not include rape charge.

According to CBI spokesman Nitin Wadankar’s press release, the five were an organised gang which lured girls through social media like Facebook, had sex with them after video-graphing them and blackmailed them.

The CBI has charged them with sexual assault, rape (as consent was got through coercion), and robbery under the IPC. It has also invoked the Tamil Nadu Act against sexual harassment of women, besides the Information Technology Act which prohibits invasion of privacy and circulation of lurid content in the social media.

The five are Sabarirajan, a 25-year-old civil engineer in Pollachi,Thirunavukkarasu( 26) a financier,Vasanthakumar , his collection agent, and S Sathish a businessman who owned a garments shop in Pollachi, and R Mani.

The CBI, which has filed the chargesheet within a month of taking over, has included rape charge.

The issue came to light in February this year after a survivor lodged a police complaint against four of them, alleging that they forcibly removed her clothes in a car and video-graphed the act, the CBI FIR said.

The case assumed political overtones as one of the accused was said to be the son of Tamil Nadu Assembly Deputy Speaker Pollachi Jayaraman, a charge he vehemently denied. It came to light after Bar Nagarajan, one of the suspects, attacked the complainant. He was later expelled from the AIADMK.

His name has not been included in the case though his TASMAC bar was ransacked by the people in Pollachi after the scandal came to light. To contain the political fallout, the AIADMK Government handed over the case to the CBI which arrested all the five in no time.
